Local Transportation
With seven types of inexpensive and reliable local public transport, Hong Kong citizens are spoilt for choice. From metered taxis with English-speaking drivers, to the ultra-efficient Mass Transit Railway, cross-harbour Star Ferry and numerous buses and mini-buses, there are usually several ways to get from A to B fast.

Transfers by Rolls-Royce within Hong Kong are available at HK$1,080 per hour (with a minimum rental period of one hour). Advance booking is highly recommended.
MTR
The MTR (Mass Transit Railway) is the public subway train system in Hong Kong, and is perhaps the easiest and most efficient way to travel around the city, as well as into The New Territories and Lantau Island. Fares are reasonably priced with various types of tickets such as single journey and tourist passes, with the most convenient being the Octopus card. The Octopus is a stored-value card which allows you to ride all subways, trains, buses, ferries and trams in Hong Kong, and can also be used for purchases in supermarkets, convenience stores and vending machines.

Taxi
Taxis are very affordable in Hong Kong when compared to other major cities. Central city areas of Hong Kong Island and Kowloon are served by red taxis, while the New Territories and Lantau Island are served by green and blue taxis respectively.
The flag fall is HK$ 16 for the first 2 km and each subsequent 200 metres at HK$ 1.60. All bridge and harbour tunnel tolls are additional. If a taxi has taken a passenger across the harbour via one of the three cross-harbour tunnels, the passenger is obliged to pay the toll together with the return toll for the taxi. The three cross-harbour tunnels have different tolls.
Hong Kong streets have many restricted areas where stopping for passengers to alight is not permitted, and so you may find that a taxi is unable to stop at your exact address.
Most drivers speak some English, however it is advisable to have your addresses or destination written in Chinese as well. The Concierge can assist you with this.

Ferry
The Star Ferry is synonymous with the spectacular harbour of Hong Kong. This much-loved and iconic mode of transport has been operating since 1898, and until the completion of the cross harbour tunnels in the 1970's, was the only way to cross the harbour.
The seven-minute ride across Victoria Harbour is perhaps the most affordable and scenic ferry ride in the world, costing only HK$2.20 for adults. There are currently three routes running between Tsimshatsui and Central, Tsimshatsui and Wanchai, and Wanchai and Hung Hom.
The Peninsula Hong Kong is located only five minutes by foot from the Tsimshatsui Ferry Terminal.

Tram
One of the oldest public transport systems in Hong Kong, in operation since 1904, the historic double-decker tramway runs on Hong Kong Island between Shau Kei Wan in the east and Kennedy Town in the west, with a branch off to Happy Valley. While 240,000 residents still commute by tram every day, this mode of transport is also a popular sightseeing attraction.
